We all know how dangerous it is to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol. It is illegal for a very good reason and those caught face being disqualified. But it is also just as dangerous to drive whilst using a mobile phone (talking or texting) yet you will often see people doing it anyway……
It has been illegal here in the UK to use a mobile phone whilst driving (or while stopped with the engine on), since December 2003 . If you break this law, even if you are otherwise driving safely, you could face a fine, penalty points on your licence, or even taken to court.
Whilst it is not illegal to use a hands-free phone, if you are seen not to be in control of a vehicle while using hands-free you can be prosecuted and the penalties are the same.
So why do people do it…? Are there ever texts that are ‘so’ important they simply cannot wait…? Or why do we find it a nuisance to pull over to take a call safely…? Family, work, there are many things that are important to us in life. But does that mean that we should risk life (ours or someone else’s) – No!
Reports suggest that you are 4 times more likely to crash if driving whilst talking on the phone. Yes, hands free included! So next time your mobile rings, why not let your answer-phone take it.
