The Best Tech Gifts for Christmas 2019

2nd December 2019 by Kelly Green

Where has 2019 gone?

It’s already time to start thinking about Christmas and what gifts you will be buying for your family and friends this year.

We know that it can be very stressful trying to find the right gift within a budget that works for you. If you're struggling to come up with some ideas on what to get your loved ones, we’ve got you covered with some technology gifts that will please all ages and fits a wide range of budgets.

Here are our top 10 best tech gifts to get this Christmas...

1) Nintendo Switch Lite - £199

The Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017 and has been a very successful console because of it’s portability and multiplayer options. Now, there is a Lite edition of the console!

This is a solely handheld device with the intent to be used by those who game on the go. It’s colour options and available games make it appealing to all ages. It is also a more affordable gaming option in a market where console prices continue to rise.

2) Wacaco Nanopresso - £50.90

Coffee has become part of a lot of people’s daily routine, whether it be a coffee pod in the morning or a trip to Starbucks before or after work. This is a new addition to the coffee toolkit!

The Nanopresso acts like a travel version of a coffee machine, where you can use freshly ground coffee or Wacaco coffee pods to creating espresso shots on the go!

3) Roku Premiere - £39.99

If the person you’re buying a gift for is a major streaming service fan, this is the perfect gift! This Roku system is filled with TV streaming services such as Netflix, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer and so much more, all for a very low cost.

Whilst Roku has many different product options, we think the Premiere is the best option as you can stream from this device on 4K/HDR Televisions, meaning you can stream in incredible quality for a very low price.

4) Tile Sticker 2-Pack - £34.99

Does someone you know often lose or misplace items? The tile stickers can help anyone locate anything they may lose. The stickers have a 46m range and a built in 3-year battery life so that you don’t need to replace these stickers constantly. You can get these in a 2 or a 4 pack.

5) Bose SoundWear Companion Speaker - £259.95

Here’s a bit of an odd but cool present to give someone, the wearable speakers from Bose. Yes, this is real. The SoundWear Companion speaker is designed to fit like a necklace and has a 12-hour battery life, is weather resistant, has Bluetooth connectivity and has haptic alerts to notify you of incoming calls.

Whilst it is quite expensive, it is a unique product that will more than satisfy the average tech geek.

6) Amazon Echo Dot w/ Clock - £59.99

The Amazon Echo is already a very popular product due to its many uses. With this latest update, the Echo Dot now has a digital clock built into the design, making it even more useful as an alarm in the bedroom, or simply as an assistant in any room of the house or an office.

7) Click & Grow Smart Garden - £99.95

Technology can now help with many different tasks and hobbies that it hasn’t been able to recently. The Click and Grow Smart Garden is an easy, automatic way to grow herbs, fruit, vegetables and more.

These systems make sure that the plants are always watered and fed nutrients regularly and have light. It’s a perfect way to easily grow food and herbs, or a great way to introduce young kids to gardening.

8) PhoneSoap 3 UV Cell Phone Sanitizer - £90.25

Mobile phones are known to hold a lot of bacteria and, because they’re tech devices, we tend not to clean them thoroughly for fear of damaging the phone.

This UV Sanitizer uses UV light to kill the bacteria on your phone and keeps you and other mobile users healthy. You can also charge your phone whilst it’s being cleaned.

9) Furbo Dog Camera - £249.99

This is the perfect gift for dog owners! The Furbo Camera allows you to keep an eye on your dog’s activities whilst you’re away. You can then talk to your dog through the camera and even give your dog a treat with the dispenser.

There are plenty of other features too, such as a bark sensor. The camera notifies your phone when your dog may be barking so that you can check on your pooch.

10) Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 - £619.95

This is the most expensive option here but if you’re buying a gift for someone who likes something different and a high-quality brand, this is the gift for them. These shoes contain heel sensors that help the shoes self-lace and adjust its size to your foot. They also have elements on the outside of the shoes that light up with not only look good but help with your safety at night.

CEO Sleepout- Raising funds for the homeless of Milton Keynes

8th November 2019 by Kelly Green

Boxx co-founder Dean Burgin braved the elements last night in a mission to raise awareness of, and much needed funds to support, the homeless people in Milton Keynes.

CEO Sleepout is a nationwide organisation that aims to fight homelessness one city at a time. They join forces with local business leaders who give up the comfort of a warm bed to help those who don't have one.

On Thursday 7th November CEO sleepout came to Milton Keynes (cruelly along with the first frost of the winter) and over 100 fellow MK business people joined Dean in this inspiring fundraising event. Held at the Milton Keynes Dons Football Club Stadium, the MK CEO sleepout volunteers were tasked with raising funds for both the homeless population and to help furnish the new YMCA building in the city’s centre.

For Dean, it was the memory of a tragedy that sparked him to take part…

“A few years back, a young man died in his tent in an underpass less than 200m from our office. He lay there for three or four days before being discovered. On my daily walk to get lunch from the Centre MK, I must have passed the tent at least six times. Even though it was extremely close physically, it felt like miles away. Soon after, the tent was removed and another homeless person moved in — business as usual. I said yes to this sleepout because I probably never quite got my head around how screwed up this situation is and the wider issue as a whole.”.

Being one of the richest countries in the world and having people sleep outside train stations and in bus shelters is inconceivable to most, yet reality for some. The problem of homelessness is a one we could all share, so it’s not too late to donate…

Investing in the future of Milton Keynes youth

21st October 2019 by Kelly Green

Ever since the early days, we have used apprenticeship schemes to recruit valuable employees. We want to not only give young people an opportunity to kick-start their career, but we also firmly believe that young people bring with them a fresh outlook and often come up with great ideas to help grow business.

Previously, we partnered with a Milton Keynes based Apprenticeship provider who delivered training in Technology, Digital Marketing & Business Admin – skills perfectly suited to the our company – and since 2014 the agency were complimentary about the relationship, quoting:

“Boxx understand the importance and benefits of apprenticeships and offer young people the best possible start in their career. They support, teach and nurture apprentices through the ranks and offer long-term career prospects to the right candidates. This is exactly what apprenticeships are about and we look forward to continuing to work together in the future”. (Rebecca Brooks)

In 2018, we recruited Aidan Carter as a digital marketing apprentice, to support our Marketing Manager, Kelly Green, and the growing marketing needs of Boxx. Whilst Aidan showed creative flair, enthusiasm and a great eye for detail from the beginning, we were both dealt the frustrating blow 9 months into his course. Our apprenticeship delivery partner (3aaa) had gone into liquidation, which meant that no further delivery or assessment visits would take place.

It was an unsettling few months for us, but we continued to support Aidan and provided ongoing learning opportunities whilst organising a replacement training provider. Both Aidan and us chose to view this unfortunate circumstance as an opportunity. The time initially lost in classroom-based education was replaced with more on-the-job training which gave Aidan greater insight and valuable experiences which were later used as examples of his proficiencies in both coursework projects and final assessments.

We were thrilled when Babington – who have a training centre in Milton Keynes as well as numerous locations throughout the UK – were able to deliver the remaining elements of Aidan’s formal education. We were confident that Aidan would do well in his Digital Marketing course assessments, but were thrilled when his final grade was certified as a ‘Distinction’ earlier this month (Oct).

Aidan is destined to have a long career in digital marketing ahead of him and we are now recruiting a new team of apprentices in readiness to support our company’s 2020 growth plans.

London set to outgrow area code – again!

7th October 2019 by Kelly Green

As London continues to grow with new offices and homes, the demand for new landline phone numbers has grown rapidly. The city’s current dialling code is 020 and, across the (020) 3, 7 and 8 ranges, there are 30 million phone numbers.

Across all three ranges, there are fewer than a million numbers left to be handed out and London grows so quickly that, on average, Ofcom distributes 30’000 new numbers a week.

To help cope with the demand for new numbers, Ofcom have introduced a new range, ‘(020) 4’, which contains 10 million new numbers. Applications for the new numbers by telecoms companies began on the 1st of October and we can expect new ‘(020) 4’ numbers to be allocated in December.

London Numbers: History

The area codes for London have changed on quite a few occasions in the past, all to try and accommodate the growth in demand for landline numbers.

London was allocated the ‘01’ code in 1958. This area code would cover 10 million numbers and lasted until 1990, where the code was split. Inner London numbers became ‘071’ and outer London became ‘081’. As part of a change across the UK in 1995, all area codes gained a 1, so these numbers became ‘0171’ and ‘0181’. The day this occurred is commonly known as “PhONEday”.

However, the “Big Number Change” happened in 2000 and all UK phone numbers were reorganised to allow for more numbers to be created. This meant that London went back to a single area code of ‘020’ and the divide between inner and outer London was removed – instead being replaced with ‘(020) 7’ and ‘(020) 8’ numbers.

In 2005, Ofcom did some research in London regarding the split area codes and found that only a small minority of Londoners could correctly identify London’s single area code of '020' (13%).

In the same year, Ofcom released a new set of ‘(020) 3’ numbers to telecoms providers in blocks of 10’000 each. The amount of numbers available was 10 million and by 2019, these numbers have nearly all been allocated, resulting in the need for the new ‘(020) 4’ numbers.

Below is a graphic from Ofcom to illustrate London’s landline allocation timeline:

With London still continuing to grow at even faster speeds, how long will it be before a new set of numbers is needed?

Providing Wi-Fi & Connecting MK

15th September 2019 by Kelly Green

This time last week we were preparing for the MK Job Show – The latest in a series of successful events, supporting growth, training opportunities, internships, and creating a focus for current jobs and careers in and around the MK area.

On 13th & 14th September we were excited to provide dual purpose at this prestigious local event…

Firstly, we were thrilled to host the Boxx Business Hub – a place for exhibitors and dynamic business focussed individuals, to meet other like-minded professionals, at our daily networking sessions, in addition to providing flexible working facilities for exhibitors.

Here we became acquainted, connected and collaborated with, many wonderful business people from our region including Vodafone, SHI International, Ingram Micro, MK Community Foundation, Popworld Milton Keynes, Milton Keynes College, 123 Internet, MK:FM, Sikla UK, Royal Navy, All Things Business UK, British Army, Ricoh UK, YMCA and many more.

The two days provided opportunities for each of these organisations to complement their recruitment-drive activities with some value-adding networking and strategic relationship building, all in great company and part of the mission to be #ConnectingMK!!

Equally importantly, we were also proud to be powering the event’s connectivity and supplying FREE Wi-Fi to fellow exhibitors on behalf of the forward-thinking organisers at MK Job Show. Conscious that in addition to the excellent catering, provided by Woburn Coffee House and valuable marketing opportunities they offer to companies exhibiting via local radio and free newspapers, reliable internet access is now considered business critical for exhibitors at such events.

Our industry-leading, resilient, yet discrete technology was well suited to the event, boosting Wi-Fi connectivity to every corner of the Middleton Hall, Centre MK venue.

It was a fantastic way to showcase how we can help businesses increase the reach of their own internet connectivity, whether that be driven by desire to improve productivity of their workforce or to enhance their visitor experience.

The powerful cloud management software enabled us to manage users, maintain security and deliver reliable service, all on-site. Another great demonstration of how we can help businesses stay connected!

The success of this event was complimented by the launch of our latest offer… A FREE Wi-Fi survey to businesses in and around Milton Keynes. Using the latest Ekahau tools, our technical engineers can provide highly accurate Wi-Fi diagnostics to bespoke design, optimise and/or troubleshoot your Wi-Fi networks, so you can be sure your business is operating at it’s very best!

To take advantage, simply register your interest and we’ll be in touch to discuss further/arrange a suitable time.
