Hints and Tips

You were called today at ………!

27th June 2013 by admin

You were called today at .........!

Are you a fan of the telephone service 1471? You know, the one where you can find out last number to call your telephone line, with the option of calling them straight back by pressing 3. Well this this service is currently, but quietly, being phased out.

Don’t go and rush to buy an answering machine to fulfil your curious nature just yet though.. An alternative, similar
feature that might be of interest to you is 1571.

Not quite as well know as it’s predecessor, this service allows callers to leave a voicemail message when you unable to answer the phone or are on another call. You are also able to record your own personal greeting for your phone and you can change this as often as you like.

There are any more inbound telephone services available that you may, or may not know about – get in touch and we’ll talk you through them!

Latest ‘Data Roaming’ info for EU holiday makers

20th June 2013 by admin

Latest 'Data Roaming' info for EU holiday makers

Following a vote by the EU you will soon be able to use smartphones and tablets across Europe, for the same cost that you do at home.

This welcome move comes following shocking reports that the average holiday maker comes home to a bill £120 more than they would usually pay.

Whilst there were already plans to cap Data Roaming charges (A capping rule came into play last year and was due to be reduced further both this year and next year), this latest announcement is great news for anyone that travels abroad.

In the meantime, you still need to be careful 1MB data  (the quivalent of downloading 5 webpages or 40 emails) will currently cost you up to 60p but from 1st July 2013 this will come down to 38p.  Then from July 2014 the charges will be in line with what you pay at home.

Not having to worry about switching your data roaming on/off will mean that you will be able to do what you are meant to do on holiday….. Relax!!

What will my broadband speed be…..?

2nd May 2013 by admin

What will my broadband speed be.....?

Everyone wants a better and faster Broadband speed, but it is not always possible to tell what the ‘exact’ download or upload speeds will be, as there are many factors that can affect them.

Many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) offer super-fast broadband speeds, but these can not aways be achieved. Availability at your local exchange and the ‘bottle neck effect’ of peak times can have a considerable impact. You should always request a line test to give a more accurate, yet still an estimate, of speeds.

We like to be more honest…… We are upfront about the fact that our maximum speeds can vary but we do guarantee that we will always provide you with the fastest connection in your area, that is competitively priced and reliable too!

You can read more about our Light, Medium, Unlimited and Fibre Optic Broadband packages on our website.

The need for speed…..!

31st March 2013 by admin

The need for speed.....!

If you feel your internet just isn’t performing at the speed it should, or the speed you would like, there are a few things you can do to help:

Keep secure – Make sure that your wireless network is password protected.  You don’t want your neighbours sneakily connecting to yours and slowing you down!

Reduce sharing – Do your children watch video’s on your iPad…? Do you have smartphones or laptops connected to your wi-fi…? All of these gadgets are stealers of your speed.  Make sure you disconnect devices from your wi-fi when you are not using them.

Work smarter – Software such as file-sharing & security updates use your broadband connection too, as they run in the background. Whilst they shouldn’t be ignored, try changing your settings to ask for permission before programmes start and you can make sure they run at times when is convenient for you!

Find your perfect place – You will get the best out of your router, when you position it well.  The closer your devices are to it, the better the connection will be.  Any walls, floors, large objects between your devices and the router will reduce the strength of the signal. So whenever possible try to remain in direct line of sight.

Keep it current – Technology gets updated constantly, so where possible try to make sure that you keep up-to-date.  Update your operating system regularly, ensure you are using the most recent version of web-browser and don’t keep the same router for ever and ever!

Where the internet is concerned, the rabbit wins.  Our maximum speeds can vary depending on availability at your local exchange but we will always endeavour to provide you with the fastest connection in your area. If you want to discuss any of our products/services or broadband solutions you can contact us here.

Talk/Text/Surf & Drive…..!

19th March 2013 by admin

Talk/Text/Surf & Drive.....!

We all know how dangerous it is to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol.  It is illegal for a very good reason and those caught face being disqualified.  But it is also just as dangerous to drive whilst using a mobile phone (talking or texting) yet you will often see people doing it anyway……

It has been illegal here in the UK to use a mobile phone whilst driving (or while stopped with the engine on), since December 2003 . If you break this law, even if you are otherwise driving safely, you could face a fine, penalty points on your licence, or even taken to court.

Whilst it is not illegal to use a hands-free phone, if you are seen not to be in control of a vehicle while using hands-free you can be prosecuted and the penalties are the same.

So why do people do it…?  Are there ever texts that are ‘so’ important they simply cannot wait…? Or why do we find it a nuisance to pull over to take a call safely…?  Family, work, there are many things that are important to us in life.  But does that mean that we should risk life (ours or someone else’s) – No!

Reports suggest that you are 4 times more likely to crash if driving whilst talking on the phone. Yes, hands free included! So next time your mobile rings, why not let your answer-phone take it.

For help with call forwarding, call recording & automated services on your business line – talk to us!
